over this time last year is
reported by Dr. Robert Heuser,
Dean of Admissions. This in-
crease gives GCC an enrollment
of 12,300 for[...]as applications had been
running from 10 percent to 20
percent ahead of the previous
year

The long lines at registration
were attributed to the system
having to process almost 200
students per half hour rather
than the 150 which it is designed
to handle. Eighty sections of
classes were added to ac-
commodate as many students as
classroom space[...]ould absorb.

Dr. Heuser is contemplating
changes to facilitate future
registrations. A move to the
gymnasium from the present

student union is a_ possible
alternative with an extension of
the registration period. For the[...]n early ad-
visement and registration in the
fall with a guarantee of securing
desired classes is being con-
sidered. Within a year it is
possible a computer system could
handle the registration.

T[...]tem costs the
school almost 25 cents per
student. A computer system
could cost from $1 to $2 per
student. Cost factors will have to
be weighed before such a system
could be activated. Dr. Heuser
extended an invitation to students
for suggestions to improve the
registration system

He feels the enr[...]l graduates in the com-
munity college system due to
lower fees and the increasing
population on the w[...]and suspension rules
have undergone some changes
this year which relate to both
scholastic and disciplinary
problems

Dr. Heuser explained that this
is to try to prevent students from
taking the easy way out of bad
grades by waiting to withdraw
late in the semester. He said that
about 300 students have taken
advantage of W’s and “have been
playing at going to school.’’ The
new rule isn't intended to weea
anyone out, he added, but to get
some people to take their
education more seriously

Weeding out is a_ practice
employed in the late 1940's in
which in[...]d flunk out
25 percent of their students in
order to keep the so-called
“cream-of-the-crop” in school. In
the late 1960's this philosophy lost
its popularity because it was
believed to harm peoples’ egos

So the use of W’s began. A
person could withdraw from a
class if he saw he was failing
With a W there is no damage done
toa grade point average. But the
abuse of this grade that Heuser
referred to has apparently
brought about the new rules
mentioned above

Arizona State University
required a 1.6 cumulative
average for the first 29 hours and
1.75 for 30 to 60 hours. University
of Arizona has required a 1.4
average for the first 25 hours and
1.55 for 25 to 55 hours of credit

Rules on probation and
suspen[...]e-defined too

In the past, any problem be-
tween a student and instructor,
which the two couldn’t resolve
was solved by a meeting with the
Executive Dean. The Dean had
the authority to dismiss a student
from college

Now the Ombudsman Com-
mittee has the duty of acting on
these situations. This is a panel of
students, faculty members, and
one admin[...]e K. Pierson, the dean
of students, admitted that this
takes away some of the ad-
ministration’s authority, but
praised the committee as being a
good outlet for student gripes and
problems

“We haven't been faced with an
awful lot of problems,”’ said
Pierson, referring to instances in
the past which required

It goes like this

the robot. You've just begun to
dance!! This next step is in
keeping with the beat, you do a

discotheque?

Now there is a dance that can’t
miss being popular with today’s
youth. Their parents should even
enjoy[...]C, found themselves
bewildered, lost, and perhaps a
bit nervous.

I can’t help but feel empathy
for many of them, as th[...]very fresh-
man dreads the thought of taking
P.E. with the mandatory shower
afterwards. I, however, found
myself in a state of shock.

“You mean we have to take a
shower?"’ I asked my friend.

“Uh huh!”

“With our clcthes off?”

“Uh huh!"

“With other people?”

“Uh huh!”*

That day I took the shower with
my clothes on. When the teacher
objected, I told her that I was
born with the clothes on, and that
to remove them would be ex-
tremely harmful to my body

My first day of high school was
also my first day of home
economics. Now, asking me to
accomplish anything in home
economics is like asking an
elephant to bark. It just can’t be
done .

Our first assignment was to
sew an article of clothing. I chose
a jacket. My stupidity was shown
when the teacher began to ask
questions pertaining to my
jacket

“Size?"’ she asked
“So it will f[...]ren't you?”

Unfortunately, I never did
lea how to sew as I was
transferred the next day

After high school came the
biggest first — college. First I
had to pick my major. A friend
suggested that I pick an area that
interes[...]ter
informed, however, that sex was
not listed as a major

After that I was all set for my
first day at Glendale. I
remember back to that day as the
most confused day in my whole
life

During a span of two hours I
dropped my books seven times,[...]out of the men’s restroom two
times, and stayed to sightsee
once. What a day!

Keep in mind that was the first
two hours. I felt so upset I thought
I'd go ask a counselor what I was
doing wrong

Upon entering a counselor's
office, I flung myself down on a
chair and poured out my life

“My mother hates[...]when I look
at them, I develop hives when
someone mentions the word
‘homework’, I go into hysterics
during the 6 o'clock news, I love
reading about the mating cycle of
worms, my feet tingle when I see
guys with glasses, I have
hallucinations of math books

all off, I don’t hate my mother — I
must be sick!"

After hearing about my
unhappy high school years and a
play-by-play description of an
xxx rated dream I had the night
before, the man kindly told me he

Antique Cameras[...]By Shari Hearn

Ed Sharpe, 23, likes cameras
But, with a collection of 150 an
tique cameras accumulated
within a years time, saying he
likes them is putting it mi[...]n his camera
collection last November. He
started with a 1s Rolliflex
camera that belonged to his late
grandfather, and a box of
cameras his uncle gave him

Included in his collection,
Sharpe boasts a 1930 camera used
by Norman G. Wallace, who used
to contribute to “Arizona High-
ways"’, and an 1884 camera use[...]“It's very crude,’ he said
“The shutter is a_ prototype
shutter and very unusual.”

Sharpe says an antique camera
is “like a fine piece of furniture,”
explaining that a lot of mahogany
is used in the construction of th[...]toration on all
their cameras. Sharpe also
claims to be the only one in
Arizona who makes camera

Sharpe said he enjoys working
on his came[...]display. The Phoenix
Historical Society will open a
photography exhibit in Sep-
tember, which will include four of
his cameras. He said he would
like to put up a display in the GCC
library. and hopes to someday
start his own museum

Sharpe said the time spent on
making a camera is the big
difference between an antique
c[...]re soft and
the focus is not as clear. He goes
on to say that many of the early
lenses are comparable to ‘‘coke
bottle bottoms.”

picture is of a girl he knew, which
netted him third prize in the[...]ability is pretty limited

that in mind, it may surprise
many people to learn that he hz
never taken a photography class

“A class will only teach you the
teacher’s viewpoint on things,
along with some fundamentals,”’
he said. “You learn from ex-
perience and you don't
necessarily have to be in a
classroom situation.”

In giving advice to budding
photographers, Sharpe said to
“find a friend who knows
photography. learn a few prin-
ciples, and go from there

“It's good to talk to other
photographers and get their
opinions on your work.” he
added

Sharpe said he is ‘‘always
willing to talk to other collec-
tors,”’ and said they can call him
at 247-9420. He added, however,
that he[...]day. While looking for
my math class, I was sent to the
parking lot, gym, student lounge,
and even to an adult theater by
one guy who said the class wa[...]t
through two showings of ‘‘Deep
Throat”’ before I realized that not
once had there been a mention of
mathematics.

One sadistic girl sent me to a
graveyard when she learned I
was looking for my history class
She said she took it before and the
first assignment was to look for

With all the bad luck I en-
countered with my memorable
“firsts”, it's easy to understand
the sympathy I feel for all new
freshmen. But, I must confess, I
was mean to one girl who asked
for directions to her biology

Fall registration was
something else this year. Geez!
The lines! Swallowing my
disgust, I resigned myself to
standing in line with the rest of
the slobs

After going through the typical
“Gee I'm standing in this long
line too, isn’t this boring’
profoundities with those in my
perimeter, the unwholesome
thoughts began to take hold of
me. “What a perfect setting,” I
mused, ‘to create pandemonium,
hysteria. frustration, and just
generally f--- people over
Although I meant no real harm to
anyone, the thought of causing
the administration to lose more
hair and nibble even more on
their stubby nails egged me on
not to anything more than con-
tinue to stand in line, but to come
out with this list of three great
gags to pull during ad-
ministration

1. The whole idea of lines,
especially long ones, winding
arou[...]dif-
ferent directions fascinates me
For fun. get about fifteen friends
to form a line. It doesn’t matter
where to, it could be into a
janitor’s closet. Like magic,
people will begin to accumulate
and wait patiently. Don't worry,
your line will grow to at least 100
yards before someone asks,
“Hey, what line is this?"’ This is
called “lining”

are so many cards to fill out. If
you have the heart of a
bureaucrat you might enjoy this
little scheme I worked out. It

your own bogus, but official
looking forms to those poor sch-
mucks who already have twenty-
three others to fill out. Don’t
worry, it will be the people at[...]n that will
inform them that it was un-
necessary to fill out a
Panamanian visa

3. Nobody. especially new
students, seem to know who runs
the show. It’s a confusion of
authority that is quite common
durin[...]ple
are wandering around aimlessly,
needing help. To take advantage
of this, I suggest dressing a little
nicer than most people and
wearing a homemade armband
with GCC on it. Within seconds
people will approach you asking
for information. Your job is to see
that they get it; but it must be
absolutely incorrect. A sample
dialogue between you and the
new student: “The number 17
card? Well, you take it down to
the Office of Administrative
Corpulence, room 12,[...]your
tertiary fees."’ Off he goes while
you try to keep a straight face.

good depth and ability at quar-
terback. With Wessel out, Stu
Haines is the only returning
sophomore at the quarterback
position. Haines, who logged
quite a bit of playing time last
year, will be backed up[...]At the fullback position, GCC
looks very healthy with three
strong horses manning the

At tailback Glendale has a
severe lack of depth due to the
injuries, but little Mike Tucker
and fleet-footed John Willis are
doing fine jobs. If they can stay
injury-free the Gauchos will have
a legitimate offensive threat

The receiving corp should be
very potent with Dave Maine and
Kurt Runge returning at the wide
r[...]ard and
Mike Moreno at the other tackle
providing a strong offensive line

On defense the team will r[...]the persons
of John Beilmann and Donny
Walden. If a couple of freshmen
come through with good jobs to
complement those two the
defensive line should be very
tough

The three linebacker positions
look like a_ toss-up between
sophomore Scott Zoelk and fresh-[...]lch and Jerry Nunez, who
will form the nucleus of a
secondary that hopes to shut
down the enemies’ passing at-
tacks this year

All in all, the Gauchos look
tough enough to better their 6-4
record of last year — if they can
avoid injuries during the season
After all spirited teams have
upset powerhouse teams before
and the Gauchos do have spirit
and talent enough to surprise a
few people this year

Gaucho harriers
open '75 season
with new coach

The 1975 Glendale Community
College cross country season
opens this year with new coach,
Greg Happe at the reins. Happe,
former[...]try for Coach
Richard Fuenning, who is in-
volved with the Gaucho swim
team

Two lettermen returning to the
team this year are Kevin Tucker
and John Popoff, both Glendale
High School graduates. Tucker, a
4:26 miler, and Popoff will be
competing for the top spot this
season

New runners this year are
Terry Hansen, Victor Reynoso
and Jerry Byrne. Also practicing
with the team is Debbie Derr
from Glendale High. Derr[...]al Championships last
year, and will be competing with
other girls in separate meets in
1975.

Coach Hap[...]e) in-
terested in participating in cross
country to contact him at his
office, NU-128, or by telephone at
937-5724.

Practices this year, according
to Happe, are at 6 a.m. Monday,
Wednesday and Friday and 2
p.m. every[...]ressed the

This renewed effort stems from

efforts to establish a working
service were undertaken by a
committee of faculty, students
and administration, culminating
in this week's opening of the

President Kate Sto[...]Advisory Board
meeting the cheerleaders
requested to be reimbursed for
$553.56, money already spent by[...]ing their
uniforms and equipment. The
board voted to finance the cost of
skirts and socks, $184.80 and[...]ed that the
cheerleaders still are functioning
as a group

She plans new directions for AS

are some of the goals she would
like AS to reach

Ms. Stoneman had hoped for a
more representative government
this year. By all indications her
wishes are coming true. Contrary

is more a believer in personal

Ms. Stoneman is part of a new
tide sweeping MCCC district. All
AS presidents in the district are

She foresees no

will take much ability and
patience to bring about the
changes that she proposes

She is willing to listen to
anybody. Kate believes in student
feed-back. in order for a more
responsive government. As Kate
puts it, ‘I'm completely open to
suggestions and constructive
criticism. AS will run smoother
with more student involvement.”

Every student has them. Most
courses can’t be taught without
one. The gap between what the
teacher knows and what the
student has to learn is bridged by
them. Textbooks, those heavy[...]on for all
students

How is it that students have to
use the particular books that he
does? What are the factors in-
volved in choosing texts? There
exists a system that answers
these questions. The following
explores this system and reveals
the mechanism of textbook
sele[...]l catalogue has its ob-
jective. The objective is
discussed by department in-
structors and the department
chairperson submits it to the
Dean of Instruction for approval.
Textbooks, tools to help reach the
objectives, are treated in much
the same manner.

Publishers of texts send to
teachers a constant flow of new
books and new editions. Within a
year an instructor may receive
up to 80 new books from hopeful
publishers. Brochures a[...]ake
personal appearances in hope of
selling texts to teachers

Usually the individual teacher
doesn't have the last word. Out of
an average of 30 new books to
choose from, the department
chairperson will ask instructors
ta screen the literature and
narrow the choice to five to eight
books.

Factors involved in the
screening p[...]material
Because of new research, an
Introduction to Psychology text
may be as worthless as a new
edition of Theme and Form with
Othello dropped. Accounting 101
would be even more difficult if it
was presented at a senior level.

Discussion between the in-
structors takes place in an effort
to sell each other their decisions.
Once again a screening takes
place in order to whittle the
choice to three to five books. Cost
of the text, organization of the
material and how well the text

works with teacher's approach to
achieving the intended goals are
additional facto[...]place
Sometimes students are con-
sulted. Finally a vote is taken.
The majority rules. What ever
text the majority of the staff
votes[...]nt’s choice for the course’s
basic text

But, what of the instructor who
finds the text difficult to teach
with or the teacher who wants to
introduce added material from
outside the basic text? Sup-
plementary books are allowed. If
a professor has the department
chairperson’s approval, a sup-
plemental textbook request form
is submitted to the Dean of In-
struction for approval. All
choices of literature have to be
approved by the Dean of In-
struction

There exists a district policy
that states textbooks have to be
used for two years. This simple
rule works in everyone’s behalf.
Teacher[...]ction and purchasing
agents have many more things to
do than go through the selection
proceedure all year.

Secretaries in the bookstore
check to see that all replaced
texts have been used for two
vears. It is a rare occurrence
when a book is replaced before
two years time of use. Teachers
have to justify any such action

After the Dean of Instruction
approves the text, the bookstore
submits to district a purchase
request for X amount of text. The
amount[...]okstore
goes into over time. Rush orders
are sent to district. From there
they are sent to the publisher

Sometimes there are too many
books. The bookstore either sells
them. used, to another bookstore
or an understanding instructor
will put the excess to use in his
classes

All the energy of selecting t[...]ection of books. It all pays
off in the end when, with the help
of books, students do indeed
reac[...]

Is your deafness a shout

This column has long been the sacred sounding board
of[...]pus.

Stop right there!
Who heard anything?

From this column, the editors of this newspaper have
tried with little success, to reach the students and
faculty of this campus on issues that concern them, both
on and off the campus. Are our words really a whisper or

is your deafness a shout?

Often the subjects discussed here are of little or no
importance to anyone outside of the journalism
department. More often than not, though, we try to
express a responsible opinion on a subject of general

concern.

Well, as the saying goes, we aren’t here for our health.
We like to hear from our readers. We like to hear
anything and will print anything provided it is honest
and not libelous or obscene.

This paper’s primary purpose is to serve as a
workshop or laboratory for the journalism department.
But it has the potential to bring about change.

Some of this reluctance in the past to respond to the
newspaper has been due to the social structure of the
campus. There are no dorms on this campus therefore it
follows that no one has to live here 24 hours a day. Most
people come here for a few hours everyday, do what

they do, and go home.

It does not follow, though, that free thought in this
school is nonexistent. Have you not walked about
campus and seen something that you thought might
need a little improvement, such as the traffic problem in
the parking lot? How about some ideas for curriculum
change? Did you registe[...]lets hear it.

One great misunderstanding is that this paper is
under the thumb of the administration. Nothing could be
further from the truth. This paper is controlled solely by
the staff, with assistance from the faculty advisor, who
does nothing but advise. The paper serves to teach the
staff how to practice journalism under a free press and
is best taught by responsibility.

We are encouraged to expound on that which we find
to be good, blast away at that which we find to be a
deterant to our cause, and would like to offer an in-
vitation to other students to do likewise.

We carry campus news but we should also carry
campus thought. The ideas and opinions expressed here

Disaster flicks su[...]Wave” is the newest
and the story has something to do
with, ah, tidal waves. The movie
makers has to give us something
else to worry about besides
earthquakes, fires, sinking ships,

nature reduce man and the city to
waste. Despite all that has been
used as disaster themes, my
inside the industry sources
passed me this list of upcoming
thrillers :

“Freeway” - It’s the year 1983
and Arizonans, thanks to careless
engineering, are trapped on an

not off. Action sequences include
a 112 mile long line of stalled,
overheated autos.

“Claws” A young

“Overkill” - Simple plot con-
cerning a psychotic who takes his
last vacation. It's his last because
he takes with him aboard an

bomb. During the cruise a fire

spreads quickly[...]hip. Suddenly, because of an
undersea earthquake, a huge
tidal wave capsizes the ship
Hundreds perish[...]ning briefcase
The psychotic is then swallowed

Moschetti's favorite sports are
basketball and baseball, but she
said she doesn’t like to par-
ticipate in girl's sports.

desire to compete. I'd rather
watch,” she said.

Moschetti said her interest in
sports started about seven years
ago when she lived in Flagstaff.
She and her mother were watch-
ing a Suns-Lakers game on
television. With a smile, she
recalled the incident.

“I asked my[...]all.”

She said her goal for the sports
page is to feature different sports
and to have more coverage of
women’s sports.

“Some people think that now
that there’s a girl sports editor,
women are going to reign
supreme in the sports page. I
don't want people to think we’re
going to be bombarded with
women’s sports,” she said. “I
don’t want to score a point for
women’s lib. I just would like to
see more women’s represen-
tation in the paper than in the
past. I would like to see them
represented whatever I feel is
equally .[...]ation, Moschetti said it “‘is
just no opinion with me.

“To tell you the truth,’’ she
said, “I never really thought
about it.”

She would, however, like to see
more professional women’s
teams. She said women can’t
compete on men’s’ teams
“because they have not been
trained to compete with men.”

Mishap ends trip to Brazil

Bicycle enthusiast, Rick
Yeager, suffered a scary ac-
cident this summer while on his
way to Brazil.

His accident occurred 5300
miles from Brazil in Guatemala
when a bus sideswiped him and
his bicycle. He was flipped over
his bicycle and into a small
ravine. The unfortunate accident
forced him back to Glendale with
a rotated vertebrae injury

Before the accident he was able
to cover 2700 miles of his 8000
mile journey to Brazil. While in
Mexico and Central America,
Rick was able to meet many
people and learn about the
culture of the Latin American
countries.

Ric[...]exhibited by
one family in Hermosillo,
Mexico. “This family gave me a
ride to their home and gave me
dinner,"’ explained Rick[...]fer him rides but he
refused because his goal was to
ride all the way to Brazil on his
bicycle. Later on, Rick said, he
wished he had taken up their
offers. because he got tired of
riding on the lonely roads

The laguage barrer was

another difficult thing to over-
come, but after two weeks Rick
said he picked it up pretty quick.
“If you want to eat and be able to
speak to the people, you have to
learn it.”’ said Rick.

While travelling in Mexico City
Rick visited many of the sites and
was able to see the Mayan
Pyramids of Mexico and other
ancien[...]terested in the idea that I was in
their country to learn about their
custom and language,” ex-
plained. Rick s[...]hat many of the people
in the city were more open to him
because he was more or less a
celebrity

Another interesting aspect of
Mexico t[...]f the items
were another thing that pleased
Rick. A whole stock of bananas,
for example, cost only 40 cents in
American currency. A bottle of
coke was only three cents

Rick also noticed that the
government seemed to cater
more to the people in respect to
leisure and recreational ac-
tivities. Museums an[...]ere always open on
weekends and the people seemed
to utilize the huge parks more
than the people in th[...]es. added Rick

similar to Griffith Park in Los
Angeles. except for the fact that
this park had horseback riding,
motoreycle riding and[...]areas could be found
too

Rick said that he plans to go to
Brazil again but this time all the
way. His next trip Rick explained
would hopefully be with one or
more people

He would like to be able to say
‘I did it’ and know he had ac-
complished one of his goals. Rick
wasn't too unhappy about this
trip through, because he said, he
had achieved tw[...]meeting the people
of Latin America and learning
about their customs and
language

Tis the season to know

Well, it’s football season. And it’s fi[...]n. And volleyball season. And I'll be dipped if I can come
up with another season.

For now anyway.

But in the next few months we'll see seasons for archery, baseball,
basketball,[...]es if I’ve forgotten any.

Obviously, there’s a lot of sports activity bustling around this
campus, with a fair amount of the students here involved in par-[...]tely, the rest of the vast number of
people going to Glendale can't seem to find it in themselves to watch
the others in action.

So, it’s an establ[...]don’t actively support Gaucho
sports. So, why? This is obviously a case for creativity, abundant
intellect and sharp[...]ed up into one clever pen. And that’s
obviously what I’m here for. Obviously.

Gosh, a brilliant thought just raced through my brain - m[...]ho won’t grace the bleachers don’t understand what's
happening on the field. Could that be it? Obviously.

So we must teach them!

Due to the lack of a teaching certificate, I can’t open a class to teach
all you would-be spots enthusiasts everything you always wanted to
know about athletics. But if you glance at the diagram below you'll see
step one in my master plan to educate the blind fools of Gaucholand
who don’t know a crack-back block from a cracker jack box.

And if you search around this page for a box headlined ‘Sports
Terms,’’ you won't fi[...]he
page, either, because the coaches don’t know about it yet. Or they
didn’t until now, anway

But si[...]l the folks who yelled and complained in
the past about ‘no student support” will have to literally get on the
ball and help those less fortunate in the sports knowledge department.

There can never be any guarantee that knowing a field hockey stick
from a baseball bat will bring in the sellout crowds. And there is surely
no way to rig'an apathetic from his destroying disease. But there are a
few lost souts who can yet be saved by the many rousing, intellectual
and fulfilling qualities that only a well-played spectator sport can give.

So we forge forward. Below, you will notice the diagram labeled
“Football.” It Bives the dimensions of a regulation football field and
the standard place[...]every one of the guys you find
running aimlessly about the aforementioned field.

If you happened across such a field on any given Friday or Saturday
night here[...]sed persons digging up the grass, you would be at a
“football game.” You'll know you're at a GCC football game if you’re
the only person there. This diagram, for all intents and purposes, may
serve no purpose to any of you. But it helped me realize that the oth[...]ore than the definitions of various
words used in this wide world of sports. Hopefully, the newcomers to
this world will be able to recognize something happening in a game
and define it to themselves and understand it. Whether you read it[...]e conversation, if at least one of you con-
sumes this new knowledge, then we’re all on the right track.

Enough of that stuff and on to the serious business at hand - you are
at school to learn and learn you will, hopefully. And if, by chance,
you're one of the gifted who already knows all this, check me and
make sure I haven't left anything o[...]Lesson one: Football, the Kickoff.

The kickoff to start the game (or following a touchdown or field
goal) brings out the true charter of the game. Teams prefer to use
their heartiest, most daring men to put the ball in play because the two
sides must charge each other recklessly - one team trying to advance
the ball, the other trying to stop it.

Some strategy can be seen, too, because kickers must keep the ball[...]e better return man. Sometimes, late in the game, a
team that is behind will use an onside kick-a short squibbler just over
the midfield stripe - which it hopes to recover. Watch for it. Usually the
kicker of an onside attempt will give himself away by letting up just
before he gets to the ball, trying to kick it off the side of his foot.
Because runback[...]play, yet one of the most exciting
Kickers prefer to squelch excitement by booting the ball through the
end zone to prevent any runback

Now, wasn’t that dull? Just the same, I'd like to thank my steady
source of material, a trusty little book called ‘‘Watch It,” which was
put out in 1971 by RCA. Without it, I'd be in a lot of trouble because I’ve

earn an Associate degree by the

What makes KMCR unique is a
wide variety of programming
with no commercials, something
virtually unknown in ra[...]ly do as well as those
taking the same classes on a
campus.

KMCR not only offers courses,
but is in itself a classroom for
students interested in radio.
Currently , about 20 students from
the college district are working[...]udents start out as
volunteers and are then moved to
paying jobs as ability and
available funds dictate.

These 20 students and about 12
full-time professionals have put
together one[...]d programming schedules
around. Running from jazz to
classical music and in depth news
to important valley meetings,
KMCR comes close to giving the
radio listener everything he
might want in a radio station

KMCR-FM is a member of the
National Public Radio Network,
whic[...]se it brings them
programs they would not be able
to get otherwise.

“Options” is perhaps the best
example of top-quality
programming around, according
to Buzzard. It is a program
dealing with current issues, and
no subject is prohibited. The[...]pecially proud of is “All Things
Considered.” A news-magazine
approach to current subjects. Its
advantage over the “headline,
know just enough to give you a
heart attack news,” is that it
delves into news stories for three
to eight minutes, allowing
thorough coverage.

“Al[...]n Rhodes,
Sam Steiger and Paul Fannin on
the show to discuss current
issues. It airs Mon. through Fri.,
5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sat. and
Sun. from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m

Traffic problem is a wreck

Have you tried lately to leave this campus at the noon
break? Have you thought of calling for reservations or
possibly bring a snack to hold you over until your car
finally crawls its w[...]king lot?

If you have, then you know it would be a gross un-
derstatement to call the traffic problem a mess. In fact

it’s a total disaster.

The lines of cars attempting to leave now stretch three
quarters of the way acros[...]y minutes or more in line are not in-

frequent.

We realize that the fault lies in the drastic enroll[...]some solutions and they are needed immediately.

We would like to offer some alternatives and possible
remedies to alleviate the congestion.

One solution might be to have seperate entrances and
exits in both the fro[...]he north lot could be used exclusively
as an exit with the left lane for north bound traffic and
the rig[...]penings on

the south lot.

Another idea would be to open up more exits out of
each lot. Maybe even op[...]eems as though some students have already
started to open it unofficially.

How effective traffic lights or traffic directors would

be is debateable.

We are aware that certain individuals in the ad-
min[...]g peak
hours it is apparent that it is only going to get worse

unless something is done.

There is also another way to go about getting a
solution and that is for the students to cooperate. They
may help out by using the new bus service to campus, if
it is convenient, or if you live close why not ride a bike.

The solutions are many but results can only come
from action, both by the students and b[...]ples of the pathetic
strivings of the common slob to
be hip, have the same effect on
me as watching someone get sick
in a crowded elevator - I hope
none of it hits me

Can you remember when there
were Beatle wigs and 007
cologne? It has been a while since
we have experienced such
products of a media assault
generated by a fad. Much can be
said of a movie that penetrates
our life style outside the[...]mple is, you guessed it;
“Jaws.”

Already you can see the mania
signs of *‘Jaws”’ t-shirts, p[...]ing as
those scorpions embedded in
plastic). Much to my dismay the
standard greeting these days is

Jaws?”

The advertising media has
been quick to grab this shark
phenomena by the fins. I’m sure
most of you have seen the Colt-45
commercial of a calm fellow
watching a plastic shark eat his
table. This is the start of another
media assault, a wave of com-
panies eager to ride the tide of
one of the biggest dollar eating[...]n within
six months:

Charlie Tuna will be out of a
job. His place will be taken by a
charming Tiger shark named
Spike

Reruns of Sea Hunt and Flipper
will come back to television
Jacques Cousteau will air a
special on sharks

In England, shark meat was
oft[...]it involves pushing
blindfolded contestants into a
shark infested pool where they
must retrieve miniature treasure
chests containing up to $5,000.
Loser must treat sharks to lunch.

“Jaws"’ will have made the
sharkskin suit popular once again
(what a cheap joke)

Bilingual classes serve as
refresher courses for people with
limited English speaking
abilities, like someone who has
been out of school for a few years.

be told what is good for him. Very
few of our state legislatures own
and operate motorcycles. It is
hard for me to accept a law that
affects motorcyclists, when it is

handed down to us by a group of
policy makers that arrive at the

conditioned Imperials and
Lincolns

This group of policy makers do
not know how it feels to have
gritty sweat rolling down ones
brows from a sufficating helmet.
Obviously, they don’t know[...]through one’s hair while
“tooling’’ down a country road.

Granted, deaths due to
motorcycling accidents have
decreased since the laws have
come into effect. But, I have
cycled, without a helmet, before
such laws were around and I have
come to the realization that it all
has to do with individuals behind
the handle bars.

He has to become aware of
such hazards as “‘Cyrus Old-[...]Heavy-footed Harry.”
These characters also have to
become aware of the changing
modes of transportation to make
motorcycling really safe.

See ... helmets don’t protect a
cyclist from receiving a broken
back when hit from behind.
Helmets don’t[...]ts don't
even negate necks from being
broken from a collision with a car
that pulls into traffic from
nowhere

The saf[...]ividual cyclist is not using the
helmet but using what’s inside
the helmet. An acute awareness
by all motor vehicle operators,

Forced Busing is not the answer

The main objectives in forced
busing are to get integration into
public schools, end
discrimi[...]or color

The very fact that students are
forced to go to schools they don't
want to go to is one reason many
of them get violent about busing
Therefore, what good is forced
integration when the groups[...]that many whites, when in-
formed they would have to leave
their schools, began to dislike the
blacks because they felt that, if
not for the blacks, they wouldn't
have to be bused

Therefore, many of those angry
whites b[...]ou were one of
the blacks on the bus being pelted
with rocks by angry whites.
Wouldn’t you feel fear a[...]em? And wouldn't it
possibly effect your thoughts
about whites in years to come?
Then, doesn’t the whole situation
surrounding busing foster
prejudism?

students have everything to gain

to assist any student with ideas or
recommendations to see that the

fectively communicated to Dean

To many, this wish is coming
true with the help of the assertive
training class, offered through
the counseling department,
which has expanded this year to
include men

Mary Olshan, Glendale
counselor, teaches the class on
Wednesday with Dr. Al Hoeffel,
and on Thursday with Dr. Ron
Frost. The class was formerly
offered only to women, and
Olshan is happy that men are now
included in the class

Glendale College’s hosts at
several events this year, in-
cluding the weekly Book Reviews

semester grade average 3.5 or

(MCCCD) are administrated by a district
governing board. Three candidates are
campaigning for a position the board held by
Dr. Paul Wright who is[...]voters (north Phoenix)
will choose between Thomas A. McCarthy, 38,
a Glendale lawyer, Bob Robertson, 32,
Western Electric Employe and Muriel Janie
Small, 51, who is a write-in candidate.

McCarthy, husband to State Representative
Diane McCarthy, wants to keep a voice on the
board representing Glendale. Even though he
admits to not being closely associated with
the college district , he feels his philosophy is
reasonably consistent with the board’s at this
time.

McCarthy doesn’t claim to have all the
answers but does believe that there should be
equal emphasis on bo[...]nd transfer courses in the college
curriculum. He does not believe that there is
excessive spending in college athletics.
McCarthy is open to advisement. As he put it,
“If I'm elected people will be able to talk to
me. My doors are open to anybody who has
questions.

acts as mediator in disputes

GCC students with grievances
against the administration,
faculty, or other students are
welcome to come before the
Ombudsman Committee. This
committee of administration,
faculty, and students hears
problems submitted to them by
students.

Griggs, and Donald Higgins
along with Associated Students
president Kale Stoneman and
r[...]on, CEAS and
MECHA. Additional positions are
open to any recognized student
groups. Terms for current[...]ng established last
spring, the committee has had to
hear only five cases, according to
Donald Higgins, chairman of the
social science de[...]ommittee. The small number of
cases is attributed to the lack of
awareness of the committee

grievances

Students wishing to come
before the committee are advised
to contact a member, since the
committee does not hold regular
sessions, but meets only when a

problem. Should the problem still

to people who come to her that

a lack of communication and

Olshan said she chose to teach
assertive classes because “‘I see
a lot of problems solved from the
fact that we haven't com-
municated adequately. There's a
lot of anger and hostility in some
people with themselves and
others in their lives. Some try to
hide another emotion by covering
it with anger

“IT enjoy what I'm doing,” she
added. “I can see the results of
my work. I know I’ve done
something so the people have a
smile on their faces and they feel
better.”

EDITORIAL
Its time to break the block

The staff of the El Tiempo Pasando has, over the last
week, met with the three candidates for the opening on
the Maric[...]ict
Governing Board.

The purpose of the board is to establish policy and
direct expenditures of the district budget. The budget
which this board oversees amounts to $34 million.

The candidates are seeking the posi[...]ection.

The three hopefuls include Tom McCarthy, a Glendale
attorney, Bob Robertson, past AS president at Glendale
and Muriel Small, a write-in candidate and past
president of the Phoe[...]All the candidates have shown good points and for this
reason the ETP staff has elected not to back any one of
them in particular.

But we do feel that some of these points should be
expou[...]the most
enthusiasm and interest in the post. By this we mean
that over the last year and a half she has had perfect
attendance at all board[...]ems. Her only
fallback would be that she is going to be representing the
Glendale area but she did lac[...]ms of GCC.

Bob Robertson, on the other hand, has a better
knowledge of the immediate problems at Glendale but
does not have the extensive knowledge of Small’s
concerning the overall district. He does not, however,
lack sound opinions on the major is[...]ems. McCarthy says that he will approach the post
with an open mind and will have an ‘“‘open door” policy
where interested people are free to see him personally.

What ever kind of person you are looking for it is
apparent that you must get out and vote. We realize that
this sort of election seems meager to most people but it
is going to prove to be critical.

Every board that ever was and every legislative body
ever formed has possessed a unique phenomena called
the voting block. Although we would not care to predict
how these individuals will vote it is app[...]there
are two definite sides being represented in this election.

Those two sides are the established business com-
munity verses the progressive students.

On a board that already has one progressive student,
t[...]ht be called established and one
swing member you can see the importance of your vote.

The budget of $34 million can hardly be called meager
and neither can one vote.

Sparks of humor liven up the Marty Robbins Concert.

Marty Robbins plays to sell-out crowd

The GCC concert season
opened Friday night with a sell-
out crowd for the Marty Robbins
concert. The former Glendale
resident ran through a repertoire
of well known favorites to the
delight of the standing room only
crowd

A mixture of country - western
music, yodeling, and romantic
melodies made the concert a
versatile performance for all

A fast stepping rendition of

“Big Boss Man” warmed up the
audiences for more music to
come. Robbins took a turn at the
piano for lyrics of love and life.
The showman sparked the
audience with bits of humor
alluding to his beginnings as a
performer in Glendale years ago.

One of the highlights of the
show was a spectacular per-
formance of “Cattle Call’ by
yodeler Don Winters

Robbins performs 80 to 90

concerts a year throughout the
country. From Glendale, Robbins
is scheduled to appear in San
Diego then on to Los Angeles for
another show.

Now a resident of Franklin,
Tenn., Robbins has no im-
m[...]being released
Robbins said, ‘he doesn’t plan to
release any albums in the near
future.’

hour late for work, and your
television class, the one with the
final exam scheduled for this

forward to next summer? Or do

wonderful time you had this

British, life goes on in an op-
timistic sort of way. However
they are beginning to realize that
they will have to unite with the
rest of Europe in order to sur-
vive

“England has realized its
future is with Europe,” says
Bayley. With inflation gone wild
there is no choice economical[...]ial among the British they
realize they will have to forget
about the strip of water between
them and continental E[...]f inflation that
America has.

In France there is a wealth of
historic landmarks. ‘‘To the
student of humanities, visiting
France is like a gold mine,” says
Bayley. “Just visiting the L[...]n in itself.”’

He saw the Chartres Cathedral
with its beastly gargoyles and
long slender human figu[...]gious shrine at Mont
St. Michel, which was jammed
with more local residents than
tourists.

EDITORIAL
A cancer on the press

Freedom of the press is one of the most cherished
liberties we as American citizens have been granted. So
what happens when the press denies itself this precious
privilege? This includes the responsibility to print all
the news. What happens when a newspaper starts
producing its own coverups of stories?

What we are referring to are the two local news-
papers, namely the Republ[...]k’s loss of millions of dollars in unpaid
loans to one C. Arnholt Smith.

That sinful little undergr[...]empe each week, New Times, has recently
published a series of articles concerning Smith and his
involvement with the Valley Bank, while the major
Phoenix papers s[...]the story prominent coverage. 7

The tragedy here does not lie in the fact that Smith lost
his money or that someone is after the VNB, but it has to
do with how the stories got covered up.

The answer lies in Phoenix’s latest answer to the
waining charter government. What we are referring to
is that elite group of self appointed guardians of com-
munity welfare, the Phoenix Forty. This is an
organization of business and civic leaders[...]bastille of the Arizona
Biltmore.

The members of this elite group include Mason Walsh,
assistant publis[...]attorneys, businessmen and _ industrialists
along with the media people, includes some
stockholders and[...]airman, James B. Mayer.

It is quite obvious that a dangerous conflict of interest
does exist with the local media hierarchy and its con-
tinued participation in the Phoenix Forty.

Is this anyway to run a newspaper? Not the way I’ve
been taught.

It’s essential that if a press is to be free it must also be
free of ties with any power structure. The last thing the
press should do is become a member of that power
structure.

What kind of newspaper is it that prints an article
unfavorable to an individual and prints that man’s reply
on the obituary page such as the Phoenix Gazette did to
Moise Berger. Berger is the County Attorney who is
currently under fire from the Phoenix Forty.

This is enough to make a student journalist turn to a
more honest profession like politics.

The news m[...]the few institutions left in
which the little man can put those in power to their
knees. This is done through the power of public opinion
of wh[...]d.

Stunts like those mentioned earlier only help to un-
dermine the credibility, and with that the power, of the
press.

Let it be said tha[...]ic have long been highly
respected newspapers and a credit to the news media.

So long, though, as the decision[...]Phoenix Forty, the
respect for them is tarnished. We must say, Ms.
Pullium, there is a cancer on your press.

Down and Out

Pom without[...]the right had virtually no effect

I'm not going to make fun of
our own cheerleaders, (At least I
think they exist here.) because
my heart goes out to those poor
girls. They work so hard per-
fecting[...]one time many years back I
actually participated, with
youthful ardor, in all of the
structured cheers t[...]ndards of many years. There I
was. squeezed among a swaying
mass of blue and buff (our colors
and like all the others, I would
‘lean to the left, lean to the right
stand up, sit down, fight! fight!

assertive stand on any issue. This

Although I did not personally
agree with her political beliefs, I
admire her candidness.

It is a sad day for voters when
they are left with not a choice but

I hope the day will come (soon)
when we will have a true and
definitive choice between can-
didates for one (and I hope I am

day of hope when a candidate
takes a staunch stand on
anything, instead of trying to

bright mind saw a community
need for a GED program. The
development of the Washington
School District GED program is
due to Muriel Smail’s efforts.

She continued her educationai
efforts to Phoenix Community
College. Ms. Small added another

Who is going to win the election
for the open seat on the Maricop[...]ege
District (MCCCD) board? Better
yet; who wants to win the elec-
tion?

There are three who want the[...]l,
is greatly handicapped by the
fact that she is a write-in can-
didate. Her chances of winning
appear slim.

The two candidates who appear
to have the greatest chance of
winning are Robert Robertson
and Thomas A. McCarthy, Jr

Robertson seems to be able to
come up with answer for
anything he is confronted with,
whereas McCarthy says that he
will not have all[...]he is elected

Then, the problem for the voter
is to decide if Robertson knows
enough to care about his answers,
and if McCarthy cares enough to
find some answers

McCarthy, who said that his
“philosophy is reasonably con-
sistent with that of the board’s at
this time,” also said that he has
not attended MCCCD board
meetings or been closely
associated with MCCCD. A
strange combination of
statements, at best.

view, shines with individual
effort. Voters, take advantage of
her[...]Robertson and McCarthy is that
Robertson appears to have a
greater awareness of what the
MCCCD board is currently doing.
McCart[...]almost
everything when he said, “I do
not claim to have all the answers
now. Anyone who does is kidding
himself and the people he is
talking to.”’

Then, the choice the people
have is between an extremely
cautious McCarthy and a more
radical Robertson. Either way,
the voter does not have a good
choice of candidates.

Perhaps the best candidate is
Robertson. As a more liberal
voice he might make the board
more a[...]olleges and universities
now, it will not be long before it
will be put into the text books of
high school[...]more mature, more
sophisticated today as compared
to the last generation. Perhaps
but I don’t believe it

sophisticated, but their minds are
not more mature than in the last

One visit to the plant shop tells
thestory that Candis is doing a lot
right. One customer, working on
a budget, liked two plants but
could ‘only afford one,’ until
Candis showed her a_ smaller
version of one at less cost,
enabling the lady to buy both
“Oh, that’s just great,”’ said the
customer walking out with a big
smile.

The business has been so

An exotic pink bromeliad with
purple blossoms had adorned the
shop and enjoyed[...]it was sold
recently and Candis says, “I
hated to see it leave. I hate to see
all my plants leave.”

Varieties range from the all-

Vine and Emerald Ri[...]ng Charlie,”

The Greenery is also inhabited by
a friendly cockatiel named Mr
Peabody, who insists on saying
“pretty bird,”’ instead of “‘buy a
plant,”’ as Candis tries to teach
him. Mr. Peabody is not only
friendly with visitors, he also
“digs”’ plants, and digs,[...]individual homes.

“Don’t overdo your plants with
love,’ is Candis’ advice toa Pilea
nummulariaefolia, has brothers,
sisters and cousins in The
Greenery who can’t go with him
to SMU, but ‘Charlie is not for
sale,’ says Candis. “I couldn’t
bear to part with him after all
these years.”’

So Charlie will continue going
to college, and waiting patiently
for Candis on each[...]his enormous,
beautiful growth, he doesn’t mind
a bit

New counselor leads active life

Active is a good word to
describe the newest addition to
the counseling staff, Erlinda
Torris.

Besides her duties as a coun-
selor, which include anything
from academic advisement to
helping students with personal
problems, Torres is corrdinator
of Glendale’s peer counselling
program, teaches a_ personal
resources assessment class, and,
in her spare time, is a member of
a Mexican Folkloric dance group.

Talking about her job as
counselor, Torres, who received
ber M.A. in counseling at Arizona
State University, said that many
times a person with personal
problems will come and talk to
her about academic problems
before getting to what’s really
bothering them. She said
academic problems range from
choosing a major, to picking

’s vary threatening to walk
in and ask for help from a person
you've never met before,’ Torres
said. “‘Some people like to make
it appear that things are going
well. They don’t want others, and
even the counselor, to know they
have a problem. The stigma of
going to a counselor is still
around.”’

Torres said she can usually tell

when a person has more things on
his mind than academic
problems by many non-verbal
cues like shaking, eyes looking to
the floor, or a person who touches
the hair constantly.

Torres said that one of the
qualities in a peer counselor is
that he be a “‘person that cares
about other people and is sin-
cerely people oriented.”

Torres also teaches a class
called Personal Development for
Chicanos, a[...]er counseling classes in
that the students relate to each
other as Chicanos

“Our language, culture[...]erent,’’ she
said. ‘‘The students feel as a
group the minute they walk in
there.””

weeks dealing with career ex-
ploration and group interaction.

be that women communicate
more with each other than men
do.”

Torres, native born A[...]entary school. She
said friends would always come
to her with problems, so coun-
seling “came very naturally.”

Aside from her work at GCC,
Torres is a member of the Ballet
Folklorico Azteca, a Mexican
folkloric dance group whose
objective is to ‘“‘promote and
retain authentic Mexican ex-[...]’ two
lovely works of sculpture by John Waddell
can be found on the campus of G.C.C. One on
the lawn just east of the Administration
Building, the other in a garden setting on the
east side of the Book Store[...]erence desk
in the school’s library may be seen a
collection of ceremonial masks, including a
Tarasean Indian Conquistador Mask and a
Taqui Indian Deer Mask

Inside the Library and pl[...]are paintings, sculptures and
ceramic pieces

All this has been brought about by the ef-
forts of Mr. Warren Gentry. G.C.C. art[...]for ten years, Gentry has relinquished his
chair to William H. Ahrandt

Prior to 1965 Gentry was an instructor at
Phoenix College, transferred to the extension
at the Jewish Community Center and trans-
ferred again to the Camelback Extension

Dr. John Prince, Distric[...]ommunity College District at that
time. had shown a desire for an art collection
for G.C_C.. which was yet to be built

Studies showed funds were appropriated[...]e from the normal,
but it succeeded into becoming a reality, for
through national publications of art[...]ard have heard many compliments for it.

There is a reference, “The Continuing
Education Associated[...]hased by the CEAS fund, in photographs,
from 1965 to 1972. hopefully another book to
bring the collection reference up to date will
be coming out soon. The book was compiled
by Gentry

Through Gentry’s efforts in working with
the CEAS, G.C.C. has one of the most fabulous
collections. Said to be, perhaps, the most
valuable of it’s kind in a junior college in the
nation, and certainly one o[...]ome pieces
have been selected from the collection to be
included in art shows touring Arizona

We would be willing to bet that if you ask every one on campus what
they thought of Glendale most would say it is a great place to go to
school. That is because it is.

This is a very relaxed and laid back school that cannot be expected
to get excited unless its relaxation is disturbed. It is much like a

At GCC there is a barbeque named for former Executive Dean Matt
O. Hanhila, a football stadium named for Hanhila, and now there is an
instructor named Hanhila.

Who is this instructor and why is he, just like the barbeque and the
football stadium, dedicated to Dean Hanhila?

Is this man so loyal to Hanhila, that when Hanhila retired he named
himself after his hero, or is this man actually a reincarnation of the
former Executive Dean?

Actu[...]O. Hanhila is now known as

Hanhila, who teaches a 7 a.m. math class five days a week, retired
from the Executive Dean’s post la[...]rving in that position
since 1967. Why he decided to torture himself by having a 7 a.m. class
is anybody's guess.

Though only teachin[...]s, Hanhila said that he is not lacking
for things to do. Currently most of his time is taken by the ch[...]rs for Blue Cross.

Hanhila also said that he has a heavy load of ‘‘honeydo”’ jobs. As he
explained it, his wife is always saying, ‘‘honey, do this, or honey do
that.’’ Between his job with Blue Cross, “‘honeydo”’ jobs and the math[...]ila is kept busy.

When Hanhila finishes his work with Blue Cross, he said that he
intends to write a biographical book dealing with his 43 years in

education.

Though retired from[...]cutive dean, Dr. John R. Waltrip by providing
him with advice or other information not otherwise availab[...]utive Dean Hanhila is now known as an instructor, a position

he said that he will keep for a couple more years.

Backyard gardening helps fami[...]me gardening and preserving
it’s come back. Due to the high,
fluctuating, prices of fresh
vegetables and fruits; and to the
fact there is less land to grow
more food to feed the multitudes,
we are going back in time and we
are becoming people who go toa
job during the day, then return
home to become farmers.

Recalling my early teen years,
we had a garden. My father had
been born and raised in the city,
and we children also lived in the
city most of our lives. This was a
large house we moved into in
1949, with five and one half acres
of land. And after living in cities
and apartments it was amazing
to us the space we now had.

Having moved when winter
was arriving, plans were laid for
a vegetable garden in the spring.
Pop had decided he would be a
farmer and we would have lovely
fresh vetetables for our table.
Plans and enthusiasm went hand
in hand with the neighbor on just
how to go about this, for Mr.
Benton was experienced and Pop
was not.

Spring came and the ground
began thawing. Pop hired a man
from town to come plow and turn
the soil just behind the backyard.
This land had not been farmed in
many years, but the people
before had chickens, so the land

was good.

Pop cleared[...]r,
egg plant and tomatoes. Mr
Benton had told Pop to allow for
some loss, for all the seeds do not
germinate. With the tomatoes, he
planted more than enough to
compensate the loss expected

The same with the
strawberries, because the loss
was usually half, Pop planted 100
plants for we _ all liked
strawberries

Every evening after supper he
went out and weeded the garden
Once in awhile we children would
help out, until one of us was
pulling the wrong plant life — and
we were banned from the area.
On the weekend he irri[...]hree garden hoses
together did the job nicely. _

About the end of June the
strawberries began to ripen. We
would have strawberry short-
cake, with real whipped cream -
straight from the dairy farmer
down the road. Soon they were
ripening faster then we could eat
them fresh, and it began to be
rather tiresome to have
strawberries every day! Mom
decided she should can and
preserve jams and jellies for use
in the wint[...]pa gives Glendale College

ways to preserve at home now
than even 20 years ago. There is
canning, freezing and even freeze

in the never ending struggle to educate Joe Gaucho on the virtues of
football. This week I'll deal with offensive linemen.

Coaches talk a lot about their offensive linemen, probably because
no one else does. Centers, guards and tackles live in anonymity,
r[...]aught behind the scrimmage line. Yet, while going
about their thankless tasks, offensive linemen can tell you a great deal
about what’s going on down there in that maze of 22[...]ity tc fake?
their opponents - and you. Certainly what feints, or tricks, they do use
go unnoticed by the fan.

The lineman will eventually tip off a running play because he must
shoot across the scrimmage line to mow down an opponent; or,
especially on sweeps ar[...]ll pivot and drive
hard behind the scrimmage line to lead the running back. Pass
blocking is even more[...]litzers.

Now that that’s over, let’s go back a bit - things really are looking up.
Your GCC foot[...]ue competition. In league action they have
fallen to Phoenix College and have taken the winning edge o[...]is really quite hopeful -
Glendale was predicted to be crushed in each of those contests, and
managed to be predictable only twice. The other two found them
gaining victory in one game and a well-earned sense of pride in the
other. And the latter is what brings the most hope.

If the Gauchos can play inspired football, comparable to that which
nearly buried Phoenix College last week, they can be assured of a
season where things can’t help but look up.

And they have certainly started on the right track and are certainly
a team that deserves a little more respect and a lot more support than
they’ve had in the past.

Uh oh. I promised myself not to use cliches or over-used ideas this
year, and what cliche is more over used than “‘we need your support.”
Well, look at it this way - for every plea for support there's one idea[...]looking up.

College Bears, 18-21, last
Saturday night. The Gauchos now

league play and are 1-3 overall

the goal line when they had the
chance. The Bears were held to
105 total yards in the first half but

Pisciotta, said he was pleased

to plague runners

enthusiastic about team
teaching. This method of
teaching is not new to the
acedemic world but it is new to
GCC.

Team teaching is one course
taught by a number of instructors
at the same time. It is app[...]who teaches
it. The instructors decided last
year to consolidate their efforts
for the students’ ben[...]nvolved in
the humanities course, but each
covers a different subject. The
history, literature, music[...]ution are covered by
specialists in those fields. This
sets up an intense and compact

Languages foreign to drive-ins

There will be new[...]een the desire
of the Foreign Language
Department to increase its of-
ferings to the benefit, not only of
the students, but also of the
community that we serve,” said
Mr. Gene Eastin, chairman of the
department.

According to Mr. Eastin, Mr.
John Griggs, Spanish instructor,
has proposed that Peninsular
Spanish Literature be offered this
spring in English translation,
followed by Latin[...]ation, next
fall.

The intent of the course is “to
bring about an awareness of the
richness and the depth that
Spanish Literature has but is
unknown to many people,’”’ Mr.
Eastin said. “‘The exposure is
valuable’’ according to Eastin,
even if a student is not majoring
in Spanish.

Highlighting[...]rograms will be two
courses considered invaluable to
the community. They are: Basic
Spanish for Health[...]s will teach
the health personnel daytime
program to nurses, paramedics,
doctors and anyone connected
with health programs among the
Spanish-speaking popula[...]ary
Teachers will be offered as an
evening course to enable
teachers of grade school
youngsters to communicate
better with Spanish-speaking
children until those children can
communicate in English

problem,’ we have to do

conversational French program

giving him too much information
to digest. Results from tests
given in the humanities course
indicate that this is happening.

Feedback from students in-
dicates that they would like more

depth in covering subjects and at
a slower pace Some students
want more time with humanities
and more credit for it. Other
reactions to team teaching in-
clude complaints about the
cramped seating and the usual
personal preferrences of
teachers based on qualities that
have little to do with teaching.

Students aren’t the only people
lear[...]any student. The
Psychology instructors are
happy about the amount of
student participation.

All involved do agree that this
method is a great step forward in
education at GCC.

Mid-term keeps tutors busy

With midterm already upon us,
the tutoring center is b[...]creasing
number of students. The center is
coping with students’ needs
adequately and nobody is being
turned away

“We started recruiting tutors
during registration,’[...]me
areas, but now the services are
adequate, even with an in-
creasing use by students.

“In some areas of science we
could stand a little help,” he
added, citing the fields of ph[...]pecifically.

In the most recent two week
period, about four or five times as
many people took advantage of
tutoring, compared to the first
two weeks of the semester, said
Rollins. After midterm he ex-
pects the numbers to decrease,
and then build up again around
final exams time.

area of GCC’s curriculum. “It’s a
very fine service for the

Students come to the tutoring
center for different reasons, said

background in a particular
subject, others because they may
be too sensitive to go up and ask
an instructor for help, and others
because they need to learn good

has been through the class.

Instructors of a tutee are often
consulted. Sometimes the faculty
member even solves the
student’s problem before a tutor
is needed. ‘‘We’re getting great
cooperation with the faculty,”
said Rollins. Rollins said that this
year the tutoring center people
will have to be careful in
spreading out their funds. “We
exhausted most of our funds by
the end of the first semester,”’ he
said, regarding a problem
the center had last year.

Guns of Autumn”’ drew a great
response, especially from local

have something vile to say about
CBS. They indeed had their
chance in the local pa[...]the hunter’s reasoning and
motivation has been discussed-
that they are sadistic, inhumane,

dropping the ball, because they
never got to the ball park. The
only time the community colleg[...]as some half baked
speaker or Phoenix College has a
belly dancer.

to have to get off their lower
backs and get to work on running
good candidates. I suspect many

and driving to the polls for.

This past summer is one
Beverly Jan Watt, evening GCC[...]tra
Rica, but she experienced the
unusual life as a patient in a
Costra Rican hospital for eight
days.

Watt was injured in a boating
accident on July 5. She sustained
ascraped side, bruised leg and a
bump on the head. After com-
plaining of a headache, her
friends took her to the hospital
the next day. The date is July 6,
and, with the help of her diary,
YOU ARE THERE.

“Upon arrival in San Jose they
took me directly to the
emergency ward of San Juan de
Dios Hospital,’’ Watt began in her
diary, “At this stage my head
was aching so badly I didn’t care.
I just walked in and leaned
against a wall. Within 30 seconds
someone was tapping on my
shoulder and motioning me to sit
down in a wheel chair. I was
taken immediately into some
room where I was attended by an
English physician . . . About three
men and one woman (with her
hair falling in my face) examined
me carefully . . . Back to an ob-
servation room for some time
where they ob[...]— no one
helped hold my head and no one
brought a pan. Dumb.”

Watt wrote that she didn’t sleep
well that night, and even had a
worse time waking up the next
morning.

“Was awakened to bright sun
shining in my face about 5:30
a.m. — just what I didn’t need
was a headache!

“Later in the morning I heard a
cat meow. Sure enough he en-
tered the room and i[...]which
represents Blacks on campus,
has new plans to help bring better
unity among Blacks.

brave, in fact, that she wrote
“it got to a point where I ignored
the drops coming from a leak in
the ceiling.”

Breakfast came to relieve Watt
from her miserable morning.
Unfortunately, when she saw
what breakfast was it did
anything but help her morning.

“Breakfast arrived — a small
lunchmeat sandwich served on
top of a hot cup of coffee, milk
and sugar. Needless to say the
bottom piece of bread was a bit
soggy. I didn’t feel like eating
anyway.”[...]better.

“For some unknown reason I
was served a liquid dinner — I
think because I told the doctor
this morning I was_ thirsty.
Anyway, a big container of liquid
Jello didn’t appeal to me, nor did
aglass of agua dulce a little later,
nor did a glass of warm milk and
sugar. Ugg. I did swipe a couple
of pieces of bread from other
patients who sympathized with
my problem.””

Her third day in the hospital,
July 8, was a much nicer day, at
least compared to the other two
days.

“Woke up thisa bed with a patient; start-
ling her. Since I was awake early
and felt a bit better, decided on a

to dry instead of a towel. Another
patient loaned me her soap. The
